Geo IP Tracking Filter

Reduce Fraudulent Attacks from Suspicious Countries

Credit card fraud is a serious and growing problem, with experts predicting annual global losses to surpass $35 billion by 2020. Credit card abuse is especially pronounced in online retail since criminals can shop anonymously — from anywhere in the world.

But what if most of your customers live in only a handful of countries?

In fact, what if you don’t offer international shipping since 100 percent of your customers live in the United States?

If you could reject transactions originating from certain regions of the world that are widely known for perpetrating the majority of online payment fraud, think about how much credit card fraud you could prevent within your own payment environment.

With our Geo IP Tracking filter, you can now do precisely that.

What Is Geo IP Tracking?

Geo IP Tracking works a lot like our Card Issuing Country filter. But instead of blocking purchases based on the bank’s country of origin, you can reject individual transactions based on the buyer’s current IP address.

Fortunately, you don’t have to know a thing about IP addresses to use this technology, and that’s a good thing since there are billions of different addresses in the world.

As you configure the Geo IP Tracking filter, simply add a list of acceptable countries (i.e., places where your customers originate.)

If a user tries to buy something from an IP address not originating in one of your acceptable countries, the transaction is instantly declined.

There is no limit to how many countries you can add to this approved list. Our Geo IP Tracking filter grants you total control over how to set up your payment environment.

Making This Fraud Filter Work for You

The Geo IP Tracking filter is a powerful tool that makes fraud prevention a breeze, but it’s important that you understand what it can and can’t do:

  • Sometimes this filter is too effective. For example, if a legitimate customer travels to a blacklisted country, they won’t be able to buy your products or services if they uses a device registered to an unapproved country. Therefore you’ll need to determine how often these types of missed sales occur, and whether it’s worth expanding your list of approved countries.
  • Sometimes this filter isn’t effective enough because some criminals use proxies to mask their locations. The transaction might look like it’s coming from Chicago, but that thief is really sitting at a cyber cafe in Milan.

This is why we recommend using the Geo IP Tracking filter with some of our other fraud management tools, such as:

  • The Velocity filter
  • The CVV filter
  • The Negative Database filter

Using a combination of these filters offers the best chances of reducing fraudulent purchases within your payment environment.
